Since the days when what is now Silicon Valley was apricot orchards, the Bay Area has been home to innovation. The start of semiconductor manufacturing at Fairchild Semiconductor in 1957 started an entrepreneurial boom that pushes the edge of disruptive technology ever farther. Today, that spirit of innovation has made the San Francisco Bay Area the incubator for innovation in all aspects of technology, and we continue to celebrate the pioneers who “think outside the box.”
Think Different
This month, Steve Jobs was inducted into the Bay Area Council Business Hall of Fame. Jobs is the personification of Silicon Valley innovation, and his vision has had an immeasurable impact on the world. Jobs himself may have explained the impact of innovation best when he wrote the text for Apple’s “Think Different” ad campaign from 1997:
“Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do.” (Excerpt from Walter Isaacson’s book, Steve Jobs)
