On the 10th Day of Christmas, VoIP Gave to Me… Business Phones

10 Lords a Leaping!

There is a theory that The 12 Days of Christmas carol has two levels of meaning: the surface meaning, plus a hidden meaning known only to members of the Roman Church in England long ago. Each element in the carol was a code word for a religious reality which the children could remember. It is explained that “10 lords a leaping” is a reference to the Ten Commandments.

Or that could all be wrong and it’s actually the name of a cocktail created at the Hilton Hotel.

VoIP, help me out here. After all, this is a business blog where we shouldn’t be talking religion, alcohol or frivolities (although we did make a slight exception with the leaping lords.

Business Telephones

The lords of enterprise are leaping with excitement over the recent standardization of business phones.  Even since the first traditional PBX was manufactured, business telephones have always been proprietary to the PBX. In other words, if you bought a Nortel PBX you could only use Nortel phones. An Avaya system could only use Avaya phones.  Each manufacturer was this way and this meant that business phone system owners were held hostage by a single manufacturer for their phones and that translated into fewer choices and higher prices.

VoIP technology saved the day with the development of a standard under which all business phones could function. That standard is called SIP or “Session Initiated Protocol”. Not only has this standard succeeded in lowered prices and a crazy number of increased phone choices, the best SIP phones offer advanced features, too.

So VoIP has delivered again – more functionality, lower price and more choice in SIP phones. See our favorite SIP phones and we’ll have you leaping too, your Lordship.
